Advanced Incident Detection for Greece’s Strategic Egnatia Motorway
Description
The Egnatia Motorway is one of the most important transport corridors in Southeastern Europe, connecting western and eastern Greece through challenging mountainous terrain. Following the motorway’s recent concession to TERNA, significant investments are being made to enhance safety and operational efficiency. As part of this modernization program, Citilog deployed its Automatic Video Incident Detection (AVID) solution across eight tunnels on the western section of the motorway. The system analyzes video streams from 112 CCTV cameras through a distributed architecture spanning three Traffic Control Centers and covering more than 7.3 km of tunnel infrastructure. Integrated with the motorway’s SCADA platform via OPC UA, the solution provides continuous monitoring of smoke, stopped vehicles, wrong-way driving, congestion, slow-moving vehicles, roadway debris, and pedestrians.
Results and benefits
Citilog’s AVID solution delivers 24/7 automated monitoring and enhanced situational awareness across all equipped tunnels. Designed to meet stringent operational requirements, the system outperforms customer expectation of events being detected within 10 seconds for 97% of real incidents while maintaining a false alarm rate below 1 per camera every 10 days. During Site Acceptance Testing, every camera and required incident scenario was validated, and the system successfully achieved all contractual performance targets with high detection rates and very low false alarm levels. Through SCADA integration, real-time incident information is automatically delivered to operators, enabling faster decision-making, improved traffic management, reduced response times, and enhanced tunnel safety.
Conclusion / What’s next
The successful deployment of AVID on the Egnatia Motorway marks a significant milestone for intelligent transportation systems in Greece. Covering more than 7.3 km of tunnels and leveraging 112 CCTV cameras across multiple control centers, the project demonstrates the scalability, reliability, and performance of Citilog’s technology in complex motorway environments. This achievement strengthens Citilog’s presence in the Greek market and reinforces its ability to deliver advanced incident detection solutions for large-scale road infrastructure projects, supporting safer, smarter, and more efficient transportation networks.
