Overview of XCam-ng
Citilog’s XCam-ng is a real-time video sensor enclosed in a rugged elegant housing for advanced vehicle detection at intersections and on ramps.
The XCam-ng video-sensor is designed to replace or expand upon in-road magnetic loop detectors with advanced vehicle detection functions such as real time queue measurement or intersection gridlock monitoring. Ideal at intersections and on-ramps, XCam-ng eliminates constraints imposed by embedded loops. Power and communications infrastructure are also not an issue since XCam-ng provides built-in low power consumption and wireless communications.
The video detector also enables implementation of advanced and fully adaptive intersection control strategies in order to achieve ambitious goals. This includes increasing mobility and the reduction of Greenhouse Gas emissions.
Solutions
The XCam-ng video sensor is designed to work under any conditions. It provides a lot of functionalities to dramatically improve safety and reduce congestion at intersections:
- Presence detection feature provides customizable data to traffic controllers about the presence or absence of a vehicle within a specified zone. It detects both moving and stopped vehicles.
- Directional sensitive presence detection to discriminate vehicle detections based on the traveling direction of a vehicle through the detection zone.
- Stopped vehicle on a specific lane or in the center of the intersection for anti gridlock.
- Actual queue length for vehicle stopped at the stop bar.
- Average vehicle waiting time at the stop bar.
- Embedded loop replacement.
- Advance / mid-block detection.
- Ramp metering.
The XCam-ng communicates with any traffic controller through a communications board (XCom) or through more advanced communications protocols. The XCam-ng can be installed up to a distance of 300m from the XCom, which is typically installed in the traffic controller cabinet. A wireless module enables the connection of several XCam-ng sensors for an easy and flexible deployment.

Mobility:
XCam-ng provides tools for real-time traffic management and intersection control under all types of conditions (day, night, rain or sun), including under heavy traffic and congestion. It feeds traffic controllers with real time data to adjust traffic lights in order to optimize the traffic and increase road user’s mobility.
Return on Investment:
The XCam-ng video detector is a low cost sensor that makes the most of existing infrastructure and its components resulting in a quick return on investment and an excellent cost/benefit ratio. With XCam-ng, city traffic operations management is empowered with the opportunity to greatly improve the efficiency of already installed traffic light management equipment as well as optimizing the use of road infrastructure through intersection control. Above ground detection technology has today become a standard solution to replace in ground inductive loops. The XCam-ng video sensor significantly lowers the cost of inductive loops installation and maintenance.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction:
XCam-ng enables the reduction of congestion and thus, has a direct positive impact on Greenhouse Gas reduction. By providing efficient traffic management, particularly through queue measurement and pre gridlock detection, XCam-ng can optimize traffic flow and reduce waiting time up to 30 percent, thus also reducing urban congestion, lost time and pollutant emissions.
Sample Projects
Citilog’s video-based solutions for Intersection Control have been deployed all over the world with a proven track record. In 2007, it was implemented in China for the Hangzhou Police Bureau. With 120 cameras, Citilog improves the safety of drivers and pedestrians in this busy metro area. In 2009, Citilog is implementing a large system for intersection monitoring in Lower Manhattan, New York, USA.
