XCam-i™ – Video-based Automatic Incident Detection & Congestion Sensor

MediaTD

Overview of XCam-i

Citilog’s XCam-i is a real-time video sensor enclosed in a rugged elegant housing for video-based Automatic Incident Detection (AID). It provides real-time incident detection and video surveillance capabilities on highways, expressways and bridges. Built-in image processing algorithms provide real-time video detection. This enables enhanced homeland security, safety and mobility for any traffic operations management center.

The XCam-i video-sensor is designed to provide a cost effective means to deploy AID on roadways. Power and communications infrastructure are not an issue since XCam-i provides built-in low power consumption and wireless communications.

Solutions

The Automatic Incident Detection XCam-i sensor is designed to work under any conditions. It provides key functionalities to dramatically improve safety and security of road infrastructures:

  • Stopped vehicle detection
  • Congestion detectionoop emulation applications

XCam-i communicates data and incident alarms to a Traffic Control Center via a wired or wireless network. It can also communicate with any field device through a communications board (XCom) or through more advanced communications protocols.

Xcam-i is fully compatible with Citilog’s AID systems (VisioPaD™, MediaTunnel™, MediaRoad™) and can communicate directly with an existing Citilog server.

The combination of a wireless module and solar-energy compatible technology (low power consumption) enables an easy and flexible deployment of the XCam-i for applications such as remote infrastructures monitoring (bridges, accident hot spot, etc.), or work zone monitoring where the Automatic Incident Detection sensor is deployed on a mobile trailer.

Benefits

XCam-i provides four main benefits: Mobility, Safety, Return on Investment and Greenhouse Gas Reduction.

Mobility:
It is widely recognized that unpredictable events such as stalled vehicles account for half of the congestion on highways. Quickly reporting and addressing an incident will decrease the duration of incidents, thus reducing their impact on driver delay.

Road Safety:
The XCam-i video detection sensor enables road users to be warned in time to reduce the risk of multiple accidents by giving traffic control centers the ability to respond and report about incidents quickly.

Digital video clips automatically recorded by the system for each incident are valuable reporting tools to investigate the nature and cause of incidents. Responding adequately to an incident can minimize resource losses and save lives when time is of the essence.

Return on Investment:
The XCam-i is a low cost sensor that makes the most of existing infrastructure and its components resulting in a quick return on investment and an excellent cost/benefit ratio. With XCam-i, a TMC is empowered with the opportunity to greatly improve the efficiency of roadway monitoring.

Greenhouse Gas Reduction:
XCam-i Automatic Incident Detection sensor enables the reduction of accident induced congestion and thus, has a direct positive impact on Greenhouse Gas reduction. Quickly reporting and addressing an incident will decrease the duration of incidents, thus reducing accident induced congestion.

Sample Projects

Citilog’s AID solutions are field-proven and have been deployed all over the world. Citilog allows the SMART SunGuide TMC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to utilize its video surveillance system in a proactive way by automatically reviewing the video streams from all its cameras and providing operators with alerts when incidents occur. Citilog’s video detection system improves incident management productivity, dispatch response times and performance measurement by providing early detection, incident verification and most importantly, user safety.

Citilog’s Automatic Incident Detection solutions provide an automatic real time detection of traffic incidents on roadways with a modular and a flexible system, in any outdoor environment. In Paris, France, Citilog’s video detection system secures an entire section of the A86 ring road where the hard shoulder is used to circulate vehicles during rush hours. The video detector automatically signals stopped vehicles on the shoulder.

Citilog’s video detection system is also present in Australia in the Melbourne CityLink. With a total number of 130 AID cameras, all incidents and all relevant traffic data are reported to the Central Control Computer System.
