MediaRoad

Overview of MediaRoad

MediaRoad is an outdoor video-based Automatic Incident Detection (AID) System. It provides Automatic Incident Detection and traffic data in real time on roadways through Video Image Processing.

As the world's population grows, traffic and accidents continue to expand. MediaRoad detects roadway incidents, in real time, through a proactive approach to:

  • Improve road safety
  • Reduce secondary accidents
  • Reduce the negative economic, social and environmental impact from traffic congestion

Solutions by MediaRoad

Citilog's MediaRoad allows fast automatic and real time incident detection with triggered alarms and on-screen highlighting (audible and visual) of incidents within a few seconds after an incident occurs. Thus, it enables rapid response to minimize any incident's negative impact while also limiting the risk of secondary incidents because it enables a warning to upcoming drivers. MediaRoad provides a number of functionalities such as the detection of pedestrians, wrong way vehicular travelers, unwanted objects in an area and more. It is able to grade priorities in order to avoid multiple alarms pointing to the same incident.

Citilog's software- based system uses existing video signals from any Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), Analog or IP camera, thus requiring no new hardware or infrastructure additions. MediaRoad provides permanent digital recording alongside timed and dated files to permit rapid identification of the incident. It includes a database for video clips of incidents.

MediaRoad Roll-Out

MediaRoad provides several integration and use advantages:
  • Field proven technology
  • Reduces the negative economic, social and environmental impact from traffic congestion
  • Compatible with CCTV, IP or analog systems

Moreover, MediaRoad is flexible and adaptable to changing environmental conditions (night or day, sun or rain) to maximize traffic monitoring capabilities. It also processes images from color or black and white cameras.

Benefits

Citilog's MediaRoad offers three main benefits: Mobility, Safety and a Return on Investment.

Mobility:
With a quick detection of incidents, it is easier for Traffic Control Centers to track any incident in real time to anticipate congestion. With faster communication, drivers are warned and the risk of congestion is reduced, which improves mobility on roadways.

Road Safety:
MediaRoad allows fast communication between Traffic Control Centers and drivers, which is important to prevent the risk of secondary accidents. With permanent digital video recording, an investigation into the nature and cause of the incident are possible. This proactive capability also enables more rapid emergency responses to minimize both resource and human loss.

Return on Investments:
Because of quick detection for any type of incidents - large or small - the system can enable adapted best plans of action for traffic managers to better protect investments in infrastructure. By providing such a service, MediaRoad helps maintain a high level of availability for roads or bridges thus, enhancing the Return on Investment both in operations and in risk escalation reduction.

Sample Projects

MediaRoad has been deployed all over the world with realizations in improved road safety. It provides an automatic real time detection of traffic incidents on roadways with a modular and a flexible system, in any outdoor environment. In Paris, France, MediaRoad secures an entire section of the A86 ring road where the hard shoulder is used to circulate vehicles during rush hours. MediaRoad automatically signals stopped vehicles on the shoulder.

In the USA, MediaRoad is present on the International Bridge Sault Ste Marie in Michigan to improve the safety of users. The automatic incident detection on CCTV cameras automatically alerts traffic operators to incidents occurring on the bridge such as stopped vehicles and pedestrian intrusion.

MediaRoad, combined with MediaCity is also present in Australia in the Melbourne CityLink. With a total number of 130 AID cameras, all incidents and all relevant traffic data are reported to the Central Control Computer System.
